An upcoming event in Austin will connect veterans who are blind or visually impaired with technology that can support greater access to information and independence in everyday life.
On October 27, Austin Lighthouse for the Blind will join East Texas Lighthouse for the Blind, the Texas Technology Access Program, the Blinded Veterans Association (BVA), Meta and other partners for a Meta AI glasses distribution and training event at The University of Texas at Austin’s Dell Campus for Advanced Research.
Eligible veterans will receive Meta AI glasses at no cost. Just as importantly, they’ll receive hands-on training to help them get set up, become familiar with the technology and learn how to use the glasses in everyday life.
Part of a national initiative
The Austin event is part of a national initiative from Meta and BVA to expand access to AI glasses for veterans who are blind or visually impaired.
AI-powered glasses can provide another tool for accessing visual information and completing everyday tasks. The hands-on training offered at the Austin event will give participating veterans an opportunity to learn how to use the technology and explore how it may fit into their daily lives.
Who is eligible?
Veterans do not have to live in Austin or Central Texas to participate. Their vision loss also does not have to be service connected.
However, advance application is required. This is not a walk-in giveaway. Veterans must apply and complete the eligibility process before the event. Those who are approved will receive a scheduled appointment for their glasses and training.

Help us reach veterans across Texas
You may not personally know a veteran who is blind or has low vision, but someone in your network probably does.
Help us spread the word by sharing this opportunity with veterans, family members, veteran service organizations, VA and community contacts, churches, civic organizations and others who may know someone who could benefit.
Sometimes one share is all it takes to connect someone with an opportunity.
