Professional Orientation and Mobility Services

Orientation and Mobility

Our orientation and mobility services meet the unique needs of individuals with vision loss. Through personalized instruction, clients build essential skills for safe and confident travel in a variety of environments, whether at home, in the community, or at work.

All patrons complete an orientation and mobility assessment. If they need additional direction, they are referred to a certified Orientation and Mobility Instructor. Because safety is of the utmost importance to us, only individuals who are able to safely navigate independently and within a work environment qualify to move on in the program.

Orientation and mobility for visually impaired individuals goes beyond simple navigation. It covers the use of mobility aids such as canes, strategies for crossing streets, using public transportation, and identifying landmarks. Our team works closely with each participant to create a plan that fosters greater independence.

By participating in orientation and mobility services at Austin Lighthouse, clients gain not only practical skills but also the confidence to explore new opportunities and lead active, empowered lives. If you are seeking orientation and mobility assessment, instruction, or ongoing support, our dedicated team is here to help with every step of the journey.
