A Growing Number of Texans are Experiencing Vision Loss

Did you know there are 45,000 blind and visually impaired individuals in central Texas? Shockingly, 95% weren’t born that way, but lost vision later in life due to causes such as inherited defects, accidents, injuries, illness and degenerative diseases. Annually, less than one thousand of these individuals receive services to help them cope with their vision loss.

At Travis Association for the Blind, also known as the Austin Lighthouse, we offer training and employment opportunities to people who are blind or have low vision. With your support, we can equip more Blind Texans to gain employment, live independently and continue doing the things they love to do. Donors provide the critical support needed for

Our adaptive technology courses offer individuals who are blind the opportunity to explore ways to make their phones, computers, and other devices easier to use at work or to connect with friends and family. Through providing training on the latest technology available, our courses empower individuals who are blind to navigate the world of technology with confidence and independence.

Through our Orientation & Mobility training, blind individuals will learn essential skills to navigate their surroundings independently and confidently. This training covers techniques such as how to effectively use a white cane, interpret auditory cues, orient themselves in unfamiliar environments, and safely cross streets. Additionally, they will learn to develop spatial awareness, use public transportation and overcome obstacles in their path to enhance their overall mobility and independence. Our comprehensive training empowers individuals who are blind to live full, active lives within their communities.

Our Independent Living Training courses are designed to empower blind individuals with the skills and knowledge they need to live independently and confidently. In these courses, participants will learn essential skills such as meal preparation, household organization, personal finance management, travel techniques and much more. Our goal is to provide comprehensive training that promotes self-sufficiency and enhances the quality of life for individuals who are blind or visually impaired.
